The food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries – hereafter collectively referred to as Food & Process – differ considerably from discrete manufacturing due to their process characteristics. The specifics that characterise the Food & Process industries result in particular from flowing goods streams with bulk materials and liquids, separation and mixing process as well as quantity recording that is fixed on weighing and classifying.
Core problems arise from operational data management, various interface problems, material requirements and detailed planning as well as logistics. In addition, there are high demands for flexibility, massive competitive pressure and an almost unmanageable number of laws, regulations, requirements and prohibitions. The special features inevitably influence the information needs and the requirements for IT support through business software (ERP software) within the companies.
