Originally, Document Management Systems (DMS) were archiving systems with simple management and search functions. These were more and more extended according to the customers’ wishes. Their focus shifted more and more towards the formation of a connection between documents and processes. Apart from the initial tasks of docment management (e.g. filing and archiving of documents) and the classic fields of input management (e.g. capturing) and output management (e.g. bulk printing) DMS successively began to take on extended tasks like workflow and business process management, collaboration, records management and portal or web content management. Today, the superordinate term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is used to summarise all these new developments.
