Document Management Systems (DMS) were originally mainly archiving systems with simple functions for administration and search functions. In recent years, they have been successively extended according to customer requirements. The focus has shifted to linking documents and processes. Apart from the initial tasks of docment management (e.g. filing and archiving of documents) and the classic fields of input management (e.g. capturing) and output management (e.g. bulk printing) DMS successively began to take on extended tasks like workflow and business process management, collaboration, records management and portal or web content management. Today, the superordinate term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is used to summarise all these new developments.
