Document Management Systems (DMS) were originally primarily archiving systems with simple functions for administration and search functions. In recent years, they have been successively expanded in response to broader customer requirements. The focus has shifted to linking documents and processes. In addition to the original tasks of document management (e.g., filing and archiving documents) and the classic areas of input management (e.g., capturing) and output management (e.g., bulk printing), “extended” areas such as workflow / business process management, collaboration, records management, and portal / web content management have also emerged.
Today, all these task areas are summarized with the superordinate term Enterprise Content Management (ECM).
